Childhood Education

Creating a Safe Environment, Pre-K
“The effect of a child’s health, safety, and nutrition on development has been proven beyond a doubt!”(Marotz, 2009) As a child care provider, I need to make certain that all the children have the best chance at development in all areas of their lives.
During the Pre-school and early school-age years, children begin to mature but health and safety take on a whole new role. These children are much more active and require more detail to their safety and nutrition. Age appropriate practices that include indoor , outdoor, health, safety, and nutritional guidelines, are the essence of building a developmentally sound child.
“Children’s growth and development are continually shaped and influenced by their environment.” (Marotz,2009.)
As a child grows, so do their toys.
A large muscle toy as in a Jungle Jim may be fun for climbing but the safety of the child is most important. Any large climbing toy, platforms, or decks, must be no more than four-five feet high.
They must have railings, especially if over 30 inches high. Safety is # 1 in priority, never leave a child unattended.
A Jungle Jim can be a great way to build large muscles, gain self- confidence, and also get a lot of exercise. Preschoolers should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity during the day (Marotz,2009).
Bicycles and other riding toys are a great way to build those muscles and develop coordination.
Safety again is #1. Always teach them that safety is very important, they need to wear a properly fitted helmet at all times, while riding and meet safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Never wear a helmet while playing on the Jungle Jim that could cause serious injuries. A great indoor activity is learning how to recycle. Children in the ages of pre-k and above are able and ready to learn, if we as educators can make it fun.
